Teach a Computer to Sing Video

For the past year, I've had the pleasure of serving as a Co-PI on a National Science Foundation grant exploring the intersection of music learning and computer coding in an after-school program for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders in Lowell, MA. Alongside my partner (and PI) Jesse Heines, we've been exploring how singing and computer coding might share similarities and help to bridge STEM and the performing arts in new ways. Our hope is that the kids in this program can explore new concepts, be creative, work together, and have some fun. We're accompanied by a talented group of student assistants and our colleague Rachel Crawford, the music teacher at the Bartlett Community Partnership School. We're appreciative of the staff and administration at the BCPS for their help throughout the project.

Jesse and I put this video together as a brief summary of our work as part of a recent event highlighting community partnerships in the Lowell area. It's been a learning experience and a privilege to work with these talented young people. We're very grateful to the NSF, the Bartlett Community Partnership School, our advisory partners, and our UML colleagues for their support. You can download the video and share with anyone who might be interested. Happy Thanksgiving!
